ABOUT

Gothfarm Yarn began as a flash of inspiration: What if there was a farm for raising the literal black sheep of the world, a place that prized wool so colorful the fiber had no need for dyes?

We didn’t found a little “goth farm” full of black sheep. Instead, we started a yarn business built on the same mission as that original idea.

Gothfarm Yarn is dedicated to creating yarn and roving from undyed, naturally colored fibers. We don’t use dyes or synthetic fibers. Instead, we rely on fiber from rare and heritage sheep breeds, along with other fiber fauna. Our fiber comes from small farms. And we work with small wool mills to process it into products.

We hope that Gothfarm Yarn can help build awareness of the rich diversity of fiber producing plants and animals. And we hope that the spectrum of colors and textures found in our yarn and roving inspires creativity of all kinds.

PROCESS

We create our naturally colored yarns by seeking out beautifully colored fibers from around the world. Spending time at fiber festivals, in shearing sheds, and connecting with small producers online has helped us build a network of fiber suppliers. And it’s a network we’re constantly looking to expand. We create our color combinations by experimenting with different fibers in small amounts on a spinning wheel, and then scale up the blends we like the most at a commercial mill.

Handspinners have long valued the different colors and textures found in different fiber varieties. By having our yarn spun at mills, we’re able to scale up production of unique fiber blends. Some of our yarns have a more consistent look and feel thanks to machine-spinning technology. Others maintain a more “handspun” look due to differences in fiber staple and properties that even machines can’t mask.
