When it comes to sweater patterns, “Rug” by Junko Okamoto is a contemporary classic. It’s also very adaptable.  This adaptability has inspired a number of different versions, with knitters offering their own take on the sweater design. The “Diné Motif Design” is one of those adaptations. The design is by Kevin Aspaas, a Diné weaver. The recommended yarn for this design is 100% Navajo-Churro wool yarn by Gothfarm Yarn. The yarn is: Slate, Bone and Walnut. It is available individually or as a kit.

To knit this sweater adaption, follow these steps:

  1. Download the “Diné Motif Design” by adding it to your cart and checking out. (The design is free).
  2. Download the Rug sweater on Junko Okamoto’s Raverly page. (The design is free.)
  3. Follow the Rug sweater instructions, but replace original section chart with “Diné Motif Design” charts and original yarn with Gothfarm Yarn recommendations.

Note: A hard copy of the “Diné Motif Design” and all the recommended yarn is available in the kit.
